Past courses

1. **April 2019:** Epidemiological modelling workshop that explored the use of mathematical models in describing past and future disease transmission, and how these models can be applied in evaluating the effectiveness of disease control interventions and comparing policy options to reduce disease burden - https://acg.sacema.org * Resources – slides, codes, and other materials - https://acg.sacema.org/resources - No. of participants: 20

2.April 2020: Training on “outbreak analysis” for the Kenya Ministry of Health Emergency Operations Centre professionals leading COVID-19 surveillance and analysis.
- No. of participants: 20

  1. June 2021: Introduction to statistical computing using R targeting graduate students in East Africa

    • No. of participants: 30
  2. July 2021: CEMA 2-week intensive short course on Mathematical Modelling for Infectious Disease Dynamics for participants from East Africa.

The course combine lectured, discussions and seminars with a series of in-depth practical sessions that helped to facilitate understanding of the underlying theory by putting these approaches into practice. The course used the open-source programming language of R and was adapted from the well-established Wellcome Genome Campus Mathematical Models for Infectious Disease Dynamics Course.

  1. August 2021 CEMA - Data wrangling using tidyverse packages in R**

N.B: Participants should have completed the Introduction to R course

  1. December 2021 Clinic on Dynamical Approaches to Infectious Disease Data (DAAID) - http://www.ici3d.org/daidd/**

The tenth Clinic on Dynamical Approaches to Infectious Disease Data (DAAID) is a week long modelling clinic that introduces participants to dynamical models that are used in the study of infectious disease dynamics. The course programme can be accessed through this link http://www.ici3d.org/daidd/. Click here to access the resources, slides and codes related to the course

  1. April 2022: Fundamental of Statistics using R

The University of Nairobi (UoN), Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Pwani University(PU) and KEMRI-Kilifi with funding from Cambridge-Africa’s Alborada Research Fund is offering a free online R statistics workshop for postgraduate students from the above universities..

The training will be a combination of:

  • 1-hour daily online instruction session daily
  • Tutorials exercises (self-paced) with one-hour review daily
  • Group project

This is a free online workshop. Interested candidates who meet the criteria above are encouraged to fill this form.

  1. July 2022: One week training for the division of surveillance and response unit at the Ministry of Health
    - No of participants: 20

  1. September 2022: The Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) and the University of Cambridge are running an intensive 6-day short course on Mathematical Modelling for Vaccine-preventable Diseases for participants from low and middle-income countries.

The programme combines lectures, discussions and seminars with a series of in-depth practical sessions that help to facilitate understanding of the underlying theory by putting these approaches into practice. The course will use the open-source programming language of R and is adapted from the well-established Wellcome Genome Campus Mathematical Models for Infectious Disease Dynamics Course.

The programme is aimed at any life scientist, public health, medical or veterinary professional based in a low- or middle- income country interested in learning quantitative approaches to infectious disease dynamics and control by vaccination. The basic concepts of the course are applied to human infectious disease systems, with reference to more general applications in wildlife, livestock and plant systems. Applicants whose existing work /research project involves the use of models or interactions with modellers and is focussed on vaccine-preventable diseases will be selected in priority.
