With experts drawn from the units of Infectious Diseases at the Department of Medicine, Virologists, Epidemiologists and the School of Computing. CEMA is involved in range of research with several partners. The aim is to generate local data that informs clinical practice and policy.

Our clinical research work spans several areas:

COVID-19
Currently looking at epidemiological and clinical characterisation of COVID-19, maintaining a data base of patients admitted with COVID-19 to understand predictors of outcome. Also looking at virologic and immunologic dynamics over time. We are leading the development of case management guidelines and mentorship of health care workers on case management. We are also involved in epidemiological modelling work to inform the national response, working with the COVID-19 National Task force.

Antimicrobial resistance

AMR surveillance work across the country. Working with multiple partners to improve capacity of clinicians and laboratory personnel. Currently working on improving identification, management and control of Candida auris in a Kenyan Hospital.

Antimicrobial stewardship

Working with the National Antibiotic Stewardship Interagency committee (NASIC) to look at antibiotic use and consumption and strategies to im-prove stewardship across different health sectors. Supporting the development of policies and strategies for surveillance of antibiotic use and consumption, conducting point prevalence surveys on antibiotics at different health facilities. We look forward to training health care workers on diagnostic and antimicrobial steward-ship.

HIV
Current work includes large randomised clinical trials on new first and second line antiretroviral regimens. We are also looking at cardiovascular disease in HIV and long term safety of antiretroviral drugs. We are working with the National AIDS and STI Control program (NASCOP) to improve HIV care in Kenya and develop evidence based guidelines on antiretroviral therapy.

Data
Improving generation, extraction, visualisation and use of clinical data to improve care and resource allocation. Working with different health data platforms including DHIS to visualise trends of various health metrics over time to understand the impact of COVID-19 on health.

Training
Using the rich pool of experts from diverse backgrounds, we offer an excellent platform for students to engage with research. There will be ongoing training on data analysis, data wrangling and opportunities to engage in epidemiological and clinical research.
